I have fun being a sculptor. I honestly can’t say it’s a necessity like most artists. It’s just my favorite way to interact with the world, and sculpture is one way I celebrate living. I love wide open spaces, which is why I moved to Colorado. I find it difficult at times to confine myself to a studio to work, but my goal is to create an enjoyable space in relief sculpture. I work with subjects that interest me personally, that give my life interest. The texture of a pair of boots, lively shapes in fruits and vegetables, the character in animals, the rhythym of an open field, all present unique challenges in composition. Working in clay allows me to get myself more into the process, using my hands and fingers to work the clay into position. I find it exciting to create an object and see light give life to form. The relief sculpture process I’m currently working with grew out of a drawing exercise. I can better understand a drawing by recreating it in three-dimensions. This process has continued due to space constraints in my studio, but it is a welcomed challenge because I feel free to explore and create with very few obstacles. I challenge the idea that relief sculpture has limits.
